Cannot access council website but they insist is is working OK

I have tried several times today to log on to my council website to renew my residents parking permit. Each time it goes rather slowly and then puts up an error message saying This website is unavailable. The details box says it is because it is taking too long to respond.

I have phoned the council and the young man on the phone was very helpful and checked it out by restarting his computer and entering the URL. He reported it was working fine and he checked it again and still OK.

Am baffled. Could it be my PC? I am running Chrome with Windows 7 Pro and nothing fancy. I am on a high speed cable connection. Any ideas?

Can you try via your mobile phone and it's data connection? (Not via wifi from your home).

It may be that your home connection's IP address has made it's way onto their server's block list. (I had this happen last night when I tried to logon to my website's Cpanel and entered the wrong details a few times). If this is the case then only the server admin will be able to unblock you.

Use whatismyip to find out what yours is.
  • if you told us what the website was we could look for you

If the council host it internally then it will look nice and fast to the young man on the phone who may be sitting in the same building as the council server ...
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Have you tried to access the site using another browser? I'd suggest Internet Explorer first in case the council have designed their site badly & it'll only work reliably on IE. Has to be said I'd have thought it unlikely nowadays but might be worth a try.

I never use IE after the version that crashed frequently. i changed to Mozilla Firefox, the September 2011 changed to Google Chrome as had problems with Firefox.
