Are EDF scamming me?

I moved into a terrace house (with double glazing) at the end of September.

EDF are now saying that we owe them £480 for the period of end of Sept to beginning of Feb (lets call it 4 months) for gas and electricity.

Bare in mind that there's two of us in the house and that we're not there from 8am-7pm 5 days a week and the heating and lights/tv isn't on... is this right?!! Are we really being charged £60 a month for gas and £60 a month for electric?

Advice would be hugely appreciated!

    Does your statement say you are being charged £60 per fuel or is the total averaging to £120 per month?

    Are you using heat and lights and TV outside of those hours? Nothing special about being at work five days a week.

    Have you read your meters as you go along (and when moving to a new home) to know how much you are using? And, as mentioned above, checked the start read doesn't include usage from before you moved in (and standing charges from before then, too)?

    Is your bill on the Standard tariff rather than a Direct Debit fix? You will be paying 18% more than if on one of EDF's cheaper tariffs or 25% more than the whole market's cheaper tariffs (depending on usage.)

    Is the statement an actual read or estimated?

    (Note that alone a ten minute electric shower twice a day times two people could cost you £40 per month.)

    (And if the figures you use are on correct actual usage then £60 a month in winter is not high for gas heating. That's about 1,200 kWh or 40 kWh per day - that's less than two hours a day full blast.)

    Yesterday I got the dual fuel bill for 29 days wait for it...... £451.02.
    I am a lone female, with one small terrier living in a small cottage. I only had the heating on for an average of 2.5 hours per day, ( I know as the bills are so fierce that I note when I have it on). They have gone up and up to the point that I asked them for an Inspector to come to my house and go through it to tell me what was causing these huge bills. No reply they couldn't care less. I am due to switch again end of this month, but does anyone know if such an inspector exists? I want my meters checked by an engineer am I wired to the rest of the street? Never used to worry about my energy bills except for last two years say, even have LESS than before no extra fridge or freezers, no tumble dryers etc, no shower?! VV angry and frustrated. Help please anyone.

    Check meters are available and can be installed by the suppliers, beware tho because that route can be a bit of a gamble because if the meters are found to be ok then they will charge you as much as £80 per meter for their time and expense.Please carry on and get to grips with your energy use. Start by switching ( big news today I note ) to a cheaper supplier. For a start you need to come off "standard/variable tariffs 2 which can be as much as 30% higher than the one year fixes. My Brother in a law, a meter reader has finally took notice of me and switched from EDF standard tariff to Sainsbury Energy ( BG ) latest one year fix and saved a projected £460 a year( plus Martins £30 cashback, nectar points ). One proviso though is to avoid like the plague, Npower, Scot Power, First Utility and Spark Energy who can have serious billing problems and put you off ever switching again forever. Safe switching is to EDF , EON and Sainsburys onto their direct debit only one year fixes. Eco 7 electric meters can be a serious money sucker also and if you have one of these do some research on here. BG are the most reliable but their tariffs are nt much good at the moment. I m sure they will respond soon and become cheaper
