Ownership/keeper/insurance after death

Hello,

I need some advice and I'm not sure if this is best posted here or on the Insurance board. My Dad passed away last week and I'm trying to help my Mum sort out all of the paperwork but I'm a bit stumped about his vehicles. He had a car and a motorhome (both of which he and Mum co-owned-they were bought directly with money from their joint account).

My Mum doesn't drive, nor do I, so we intend to sell them but I'm not sure what I need to do with regards to insurance whilst before we sell them. I'm assuming that the insurance policy ends on death? The motorhome is currently parked in a parking space in the housing association are my Mum lives in. What can I do to insure the vehicle in the meantime as I'm concerned about any accidental damage? Do I need to alter the registered keeper of the vehicle?

If anyone has some advice I'd much appreciate it.

  • Sorry for your loss.

Just ring the insurance companies for both vehicles and explain to them what's happened and they'll allow cover so you can sell them. Don't add another keeper.
  • When my dad died last year, I spoke to the insurers of his car (I was a named driver on the policy) and they terminated his policy giving me 24 hours notice to find cover elsewhere. The premium for the remaining period was refunded to the card he used to make payment. The card was kept active by the bank because they were made aware of the incoming refund.

We took out another policy elsewhere with very limited mileage applied, paid for 12 months up front, and once we sold the car that policy was terminated for a small admin fee.

We had no problem selling the car, once sold the money was paid into the estate.

As said speak to your insurance company IME they are a lot more helpful than marty2be2000 found.

When my dad died and rang the insurance company they cancelled it immediately , didn't give me any help or advice or any time to find other cover , this was with M+S

I suggest you get the insurance sorted asap in case something happens to it as it more than likely wont be covered, i got one of these 30 day policy's, this covered it just enough until it was sold, i didn't change the keeper
