Kitchen flooring - York stone?

Thinking about having York stone laid over wet under floor heating in our new kitchen extension 5m x 5m. Not cheap, but will only be laid once!

I understand it will need to be sealed and laid on a bed of cement etc, but wondered if anyone has a natural stone / slate floor and how do they cope with day to day wear, stains, scratches, marks etc....

Thanks

  • Once saw a floor done from random purple welsh slate laid in ceramic adhesive and grouted.
3 coats of hardglaze seal and it was surprisingly warm to walk on, looked the absolute dogs bits, a real talking point. .

We have limestone laid in our kitchen and it looks amazing. My parents have solid stone in their kitchen/dining area with underfloor heating everywhere and it's also nice and comfortable to walk on in the winter!
  • We have 2000sqm of French limestone downstairs over a wet UFH. It was sealed with Lithofin and is still as good 10 years on as when it was first laid. We have teens, dogs and chickens, wear wellies on it.......we clean it with a Polti steam cleaner and the Lithofin has been renewed once.
  • I have a friends of mine who have a natural stone floor and they clean it with a few drops of neutral PH stone cleaners available at retail stores. But I think you can try with mixing some liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water.
  • We had it in our old kitchen - hated it - it was done badly and always dirty and hid the dirt well. It also hid chips/scratches etc well.

If it's done well over UFH I am sure it would be lovely but everything was bodged in our old house so make sure you are comfortable with the quality of the fitter.

    We're all for wood now!
