help with figuring out which hard drive...

when the OP posted the first link , showing a listing for his model of laptop , and a link showing a photo of the drive , a quick check on the MFG site showed that it was a sata 3 drive , not an IDE one
I think you are just clouding the water , by stating historic facts that have no relation to the currant situation0 -

OP said it was an old laptop, FACT.
What i've said is still perfectly relavent because manufacturers quite often restrict what hard drives can be used in their systems, even to within a certain pool of serial numbers.
The stupid thing to do, would be to go out and buy a new HDD without checking whether such restrictions might exist for that make/model.
I'm advising the OP to do some research, check the make/model to make sure they don't buy something incompatible.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

the model is a Sony Viao sve151d11m and the drive that was fitted at the factory is a toshiba mq01abd050

yes it is old , but not vintage it is a modern circit board and a modern CPU , and a STANDARD sata laptop drive
I again think you are clouding the water ,
hard drive sizes as you pointed out with your comments about HPA partitions (to fool the bios) are a legacy of the old IDE drive days,
there are still some problems when accessing huge (think many terabytes) drives on some sata systems , however the OP is talking about a small capacity (and size) sata 2 drive0 -
Lol..gents/ladies clam your knickers!
this is all online and it doesnt matter in the real world
For the record, I am still grateful to all that replied and answered the original question0 -

Don't exaggerate it if this exists at all. I never came across this problem.0 -
You should be looking at 2.5" SATA.
How much GB do you usually use?
If you don't need a lot of storage, you can consider SSD.
I suggest 250GB, but you may think it is a bit pricey.

If you need a bit of storage, I suggest you get Hybrid drive or 7200rpm instead of cheap 5400rpm.

as per the first reply to the posting
"if you are only using the laptop for a bit of browsing etc , and not much storage then a ssd would be better 60g minimum http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Tec...4&keywords=ssd "0
