solicitors fees question

I got a quote from the family solicitor with regards to the legal fees and paperwork with purchasing a property for a figure of £120k.
The fee total was quoted at near £1200.
The local search was approximated at £150 (if required).
And as it's a flat leasehold, The notice of the transfer of the freeholders was not included.
A family member obtained the quote.
My question is
1) is the sum about right as a ball park? I will obtain a few quotes (how many))?), but wanted to get an idea of this quote.
2) how much extra would serving the notice of the freeholders cost, roughly?
3) local search fee...what is it and do I need it?
4) is vat normally added onto the 1200? The solicitor fee is about 635 with 'vat hereon 127'...is vat added onto the remainder ~600?
Much appreciated!

Need to see the full quote. That is the barest detail.

Between £20 and £500

provided by Local Authority. Up to you unless you are getting a mortgage in which case no choice. Cost varies by council.

Yes & No.
Much appreciated!

It partly depends on your location. In my area (South West) you could get your conveyencing done for £1000 including everything except leashold management transfer fees. In London double it

I'm not sure it really is double in London. There's no need to use a solicitor located where you live or where you're buying. I bought a flat in Greater London last year and used a solicitor based where I used to live. I paid £1200 including VAT and disbursements (excluding SDLT), plus £150 for the leasehold management transfer.
If the London solicitors are really charging double what everyone else does, surely all their potential clients would just find a solicitor outside London...Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0
