Old mobile phone - poor signal

I have an extremely basic Nokia phone circa ten years old and do quite often have trouble getting a signal.

Is it the case that new phones have better receivers and are thus able to get a stronger signal?

If so, I had better think about updating:o

Old phone - likely to be 2G.
It could be the phone itself or the network 2G signal might be patchy for your area.
Best to move on for at least 3G if not for a 4G capable phone.

More likely to be a network issue than a phone issue. Easily checked by swapping the SIM to another (unlocked) handset and checking the signal stength.
But I've often found that the old 2G Nokia's will get a signal when a modern iPhone or Android phone won't.
You can still get a basic 3G handset for about a tenner.

4G has virtual not existent coverage (I have a 4G phone and SIM on contract), 3G is only normally used for data unless you are on 3, 2G is widely available.

It seems to be the locations that I want to use the phone in that are the problem - put in three postcodes and each only had one marker, so I guess it isn't the phone.

They were all in the West Country, so it looks like mobile phone reception is really atrocious over the Devon/Somerset area.

Have you tried different phone providers on the coverage map?.
