£5000 Gas Bill

An Estimated reading is just that - A guess by your supplier as what they think your meter may read on a given date, which in this case they under estimated.
What counts are the actual readings by a meter reader, or one that you report to the supplier - Assuming you read the meter correctly
As the Estmated read and the final meter read, (read by you but not yet given to the supplier ?), 12 days later, are some way apart, you should advise the supplier of the reading who will issue a new bill that is accurate to your consumption.
Meter Units to Kwh
This short-cut gives a very close estimate of the bill cost.
Multiply the meter units used by 11.2 to find the number of Kwh that will be charged for
(Example 103 meter units used x 11.2 = 1154 chargeable Kwh )0 -

If our bill for the estimated reading of 01660 is £200.47, surely that means an actual reading of 01951 means that it will be very high?
Is there any balance carried forward on that bill? On the bill, does it say 01626 or 16260 for your October reading? That would seem to be a very high bill for very low usage.0 -
dogshome That was not the question the OP actually asked..... but useful information anyway.
The OP was just checking that we had used her actual meter readings to make the calculations.

tripled - Maybe they are on the standard tariff! Unless they used your calculation as an example?!?0 -
Ah sorry I am so confused, maths is really not my forte at all
So, the readings I've taken previously I've submitted as for example 16260 rather than 01626 and this is how they show on my account.
What my main concern is that British Gas think my meter should read around 16608 and based on that usage i ower them £200 when in fact my usage is 19515 and therefore if I submitted an actual reading my bill would be huge?
We are on the BG standard tariff as well
The bill has no balance carried forward as we pay off in full for our our actual usage0 -
Nope! You have confused yourself methinks.
We just explained, that £200 bill we calculated is based on your actual 1951 reading, so your usage from 28/10 to 16/02.
British Gas thought (estimated) that you had used a lot less during that same period. So when they get the correct reading it will just generate a bill based on the rest of what you actually owe.
So up untill 4th Feb British Gas though (for whatever reason) you had only used £50ish of gas. When you supplied the actual meter reading on the 16th it will recalculate and they will request the remaining £150 or whatever it amounts to.0 -
OK, thank you so much everyone as I was in a complete panic that we were owing them thousands
I will change tariffs and keep an eye on our consumption
Thank you once again0 -
Actually sorry to be a pain on this - I haven't submitted the meter reading of 1951 reading to them as the website returned saying that this usage was not what they were expecting.
therefore if they billed us for the actual consumption it'd be £200 + a whole lot more?
Sorry I didn't make this clearer earlier0 -
Your current usage is 291 meter units or about £150.
Trouble is all your previous bills are wrong. You have been overpaying. Previous difference you paid for 348 meter units but only used 34.8.
Unless I am totally confused (entirely possible) you are due nine-tenths of your previous bills back.0 -
Right and is this because I've submitted the readings incorrectly as say 16125 instead of 01612?0
-
I'd suggest you give them a call to make sure they have the readings correct. Based on what you've said, they should be 01626 for 28/10 and 01951 for today. If that doesn't tie up with what is on their systems, ask them to send a meter reader round

Edit: Can you confirm exactly what it says for readings on your estimated bill? It should say something like
28/10/14 01626 A (for Actual, or C for Customer)
04/02/15 01660 E (for Estimated)
34 m3 used
The more I read back through your posts, the more I'm thinking they have the wrong readings (16260 instead of 01626).0
