question about a metal sink lid in a rented flat

I am renting a flat
There is a shower and naturally, a hole at the bottom where water goes down.
On the floor near the side of the shower there is a circular metal object.
I have been doing some tidying up.. And I looked at it and thought what to do with it, can I throw it out.
Here it was on the floor near the shower

Here it is closer up you see it is not that clean...

And the other side.

I suppose I can't chuck it out?
I could put it in a draw but i'm trying to tidy up and make things neat and get rid of things I don't need.. But I suppose I can't chuck it out because it's part of the flat.
The previous tenant didn't use it. It was on the floor by the shower.
What do you suggest I do?

Clean it and then fit it over the drain hole, it is there for esthetic reasons as well as to make it easier to clean out hair, scum etc.
Don't throw it out use it correctly, your falt must have been in a poor state when you moved in!0 -
As ognum says, it's a filter and it makes sense to use it for cleaning purposes, but the other advantage is that if you drop something in the shower there's less likelihood that it will disappear down the drain requiring you to call out a plumber to recover your valuables.0

How should I clean it. It has not just white marks on it (limescale? other?) but also Rust.
I am a regular male, in that I don't wear jewellery - nothing valuable is going to drop out or off me while in the shower. My hair is short it won't clog things.
Out of interest, if I threw it out would that be a violation? a serious violation?0 -
As a child my sister was constantly dropping her contact lenses down the sink. We became quite expert at undoing the U-bend to retrieve them....0

I would just soak it in some bleachy water and then give it a scrub with an old toothbrush to get it clean, or if you don't want to use it just chuck it in an under sink cupboard and forget about it.0
