Rbs royalties

I set up my bank account many years ago when I got my first job. I was very nervous and it was quite a big deal for me. My first real step into the grown up world. The first thing I did alone! The guy I was dealing with proceeded to tell me about the RBS Royalties. If I paid a little extra I would get all sorts of benefits. Concert tickets etc. I intitially said no because I just needed somewhere for my wages to go. I wanted to go home and ask my mum about it before I decided. I asked if I could do that and he said no it has to happen when the account is set up. I said I didn't want this. He looked disheartened and said that I would be missing out on some really good offers. He read them all out to me again. I had never felt so much pressure at that age! I agreed and he was a very happy man!
I have never used any of this 'beneficial' stuff and it was only a few years ago when I switched to online banking that I realised I was even still paying it! I know it's my own stupid mistake for not doing something about it as my older self but I live in a different area and have been told I cannot cancel it over the phone and I must go back to my old bank , it's made it easier to put off. Does anyone know if this is something that can be claimed back?

Don't know if you can claim it back - depends on circumstances. There is information elsewhere on the forum about packaged accounts which might tell you more.
But regarding cancelling, and being told you can't do it over the phone but must visit branch why not write to the branch? They have to follow instructions in writing. Ask for the account to be converted to, say, a Select account - no fees on that as far I know.
Edited to add - MSE article on packaged accounts here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/reclaim-packaged-bank-accounts
and forum follow-up here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4405061
And info on Select account here: http://personal.rbs.co.uk/personal/current-accounts/compare-current-accounts/select-account.html0 -
You can online change the account to the fee free one!
Think when you log on to your account to the right there is a link for "Upgrading your account" and change it to the Select account and is done almost instantly!0 -
You can downgrade over the telephone now.
You just need to speak to the downgrades team.
