Any of the above will work, but I've always found that Vaseline lasts the longest. Use an old toothbrush and work it into the hinge.

    Olive oil, vegetable oil, etc

All these work fine, last ages, are cheap and you probably have one in your house most of the time.
I pour a tablespoon of whatever oil into a dish/bowl/tub, wander around the house with a pastry brush, oil all hinges and done.

wd 40 , its more macho walking round the house with a spray can than the toothbrush/ Vaseline

solid wax or graphite powder for me.

WD40 is not actually a lubricant. Although it is often used as if it were one.
Its use will, however, stop a squeaky hinge for some time.
Probably better to use an oil spray for more permanent solution.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • WD40 for me, though I'm well aware it's not really the right tool for the job. It works though.

WD40, I had no idea it wasn't the right thing to use. The can seems to last for ever, whereas I'd have to go out and buy Vaseline etc, so I'm sticking with it for now.

Oiling hinges is about the limit of my DIY skills and I'm always quite proud of myself when I've stopped a door squeaking. :)
  • WD40 to help clean anything that shouldn't be there out of the hinge, followed by general use oil.
