The OP says the booking is for the forst weekend in March so why did he say

'If cancelled up to 7days before date of arrival, 100 percent of the first night will be charged.'

    Obviously I owe this money

Obviously the OP needs to clarify the timings - my comment was based solely on the only dates he has thus far mentioned. :)

Seems clear to me. If you make a booking and cancel more than 7 days in advance, then you are liable for just the 1st night.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

    Yes, I agree.

    Nothing untoward has happened here.

But that is NOT what the OP posted ... he mentions if cancelled up to 7 days before the date of arrival - the exact opposite of what you are asserting.

    Not at all

"'If cancelled up to 7 days before date of arrival, 100 percent of the first night will be charged.' "

    Not "within"

"Up to" means up to and including 7 days before.

Presumably within 7 days means you are liable for the full charge (ir not just the first night), though that part has not been made clear.

Im unsure why people are having trouble with this.

    It's very clear.

If you cancel with greater than 7 days notice you are charged one night.

If you cancel with less than 7 days notice you are liable for the full cost.

I think halibut and JR are right in their interpretation, it would be helpful of the OP had posted the full condition, as I suspect it goes on to say that within 7 days some greater amount is forfeit. Sadly we may never know for sure.
  • A google of "If cancelled up to 7days before date of arrival, 100 percent of the first night will be charged" reveals the following from several hoteliers.

"If cancelled up to 7 days before date of arrival, 100 percent of the first night will be charged.

If cancelled within 7 days or in case of no-show, the total price of the reservation will be charged."
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
