Subway-Jersey City and New York

Hi,

I am going to New York at the end of April and will be staying in New Jersey by Journal Square Path Station.

What is the best value metro ticket I can get for 5 days?

From what I understand that you cant use the Metrocard for the Subway on Path Trains?

Many thanks

James

  • I can't answer your specific question but I think that's the area we stayed in. We were at the Westin Jersey City and really liked it. It was almost right opposite the hotel and there was a mall with Macy's etc. Cheaper than NY because you pay less tax in NJ too! There was also a Target and maybe Best Buy I think just along the road. Nothing much to do in the evening though if you don't go into NY.

NJ is not on the subway but from Journal Square you can get PATH trains to Manhattan. They used to have separate ticketing to the subway but that may have changed - I was there a few years ago. It's a good choice to stay in NJ - cheaper and more spacious rooms yet only a few minutes away from the city.

You can use Metrocard pay-per-ride but not any of the period tickets.

There is also a 10 ride card for for $21 which saves 65c each trip or a seven day pass for $29 - in each case plus $5 for the 'Smartlink' card.

Public transport in New Jersey unfortunately has very disjointed ticketing between systems.
