bathrooms question - can i mix basins and pedestals?

strange one but i've sort of been backed into a corner about this one and i can't find another solution to my problem (it's too long and boring to explain in full!)

long story short, can i buy a basin from one manufacturer, and put a pedestal from another manufacturer underneath it? is the 'fit' between a basin and pedestal standardised or does each company have it's over type? what can be different across companies?

They are cast to shape together to the dish of the basin

would using a wall hung basin or a basin supported by a vanity unit be an option?

The underside of the basin and the top of the pedestal need to be the same shape, so different manufacturers parts will not be a good fit together.

A wall hung basin or a vanity unit would definitely be an option but bear in mind that a wall hung basin needs VERY solid fixings, so if it's a plasterboard stud wall then it would need to be strengthened significantly to take the weight.
