Do you have to go onto a fixed tarriff?

Get the keys to our new house on Friday and i'm just trying to get a clear picture in my head of who is going to be the best for our utilities.
I've had a look on the Energy Saving Club on here and can see that OVO are due to reduce their gas prices by 10% on 1st March. Is there anyway I can go with OVO and not fix my tarriff, then when the prices come down fix in?
We won't actually be moving in for another few months as there is some work we need to do on it first and we're on holiday for a while so I can't imagine our usage is going to be that high in the first instance anyway.

The day you take over this house you must report your occupancy and the meter readings to the present supplier/s of Gas, Elec & Water
The Gas/Elec suppliers will send you a 'Welcome pack' and as soon as you recieve this you can change to another supplier of your choice
The present supplier will log you as a new customer and put you on their
'Standard' tariff, which is expensive but has no tie-ins
As you are not actually moving in for some time, the expensive Kwh prices of the Standard tariff won't affect you and you will be only paying the Daily Standing Charge
So probably worth waiting till you actually move in to sort out the best supplier at that time0 -
Oh I had every intention of letting them know asap!
If it isn't blindingly obvious when I get in there how do I find out who the current suppliers are? Or is this something the estate agent will inform me when picking up the keys etc?=
Sorry, first time buying a house so new to all of this!
And whilst we won't be moving in for a few months I will be there most nights and weekends renovating and decorating etc so I guess electric usage will be limited to a couple lights being on and my ipod dock for music to keep me company haha!0 -
The estate agent or solicitor will supply you those details. the sellers have to fill a form in which contains all this info0
-
The EA should know, but if not ask your solicitor to ask the specific question to the vendors legal eagle0

If you don't get the information when you move, you can find out the current suppliers with a couple of phone calls

1. Tell your Deemed Supplier and then initiate a switch.
2. Occasional use then chose a supplier with no daily standing charges.
3. Seventeen days before you take up full occupation switch to a fixed rate tariff with low exit fees to get the best value for money with the ability to switch if energy prices change. But, beware:

Take frequent meter readings and pass these on to the supplier. Review deals monthly. Saving money on energy requires quite a bit of effort. Energy companies get rich on customer complacency. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
