Look as though new iTunes & Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit aren't compatible without uninstalling & reinstalling iTunes. This will cause me huge problems as I don't have easy access to a lot of my CD's. I also don't want to lose my playlists. If nothing else, being able to save the list of what songs are in each playlist would be good. For the music, I'll just have to make do with what CD's I can get to easily. Finding time to reimport the lot will be a problem though. I can't back up to external hard drive as both usb ports on my laptop aren't working. I can back up onto DVD r though which I know will only be good for list of songs in each playlist. Please could someone tell me how I can get the playlists saved & also what I'm going to lose if I do have to do a complete uninstall & reinstall, I'm thinking it'll be everything. Being honest I'm surprised and angry that iTunes haven't done the new version to be compatible with Windows 7 64 bit OS.

My machine is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and I was able to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes with no problems at all. In fact, it is better and runs faster than the previous version.

FYI: completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes will have no bearing what so ever on your actual iTunes library which will remain under your user account completely untouched when iTunes is removed.

Follow this article to remove itunes properly: http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT1923

Also it works fine for me on Windows 7 64-bit so the problem is your own no point in getting "angry" with iTunes.

Where did this information come from?

I've just updated iTunes on my main box that has the same OS and version, had no issues at all but I did run Windows update first.
  • No problemo on our Win7 64 bit either.

Have installed all important windows updates making sure to remove ticks from any that were for 32 bit.

Still getting an error message which says iTunesHelper din't install and Error 7. Looks as though I need to uninstall & reinstall iTunes but last time I had to do this, my music was safe but I'd lost all my playlists.

I know there's a way of saving lists of songs in each playlist from within iTunes but iTunes won't open, all I'm getting is box appearing in the middle of the screen which says:

iTunes was not installed properly, please reinstall iTunes
    Error 7 (Windows error 193).

Editing today that on laptop starting the message box is saying iTuneshelper not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes.

Editing again to say that I've just checked my iPod Classic 80gb & all my playlists are on there, I'd forgotten that I'd done a full synch last time my iPod was linked to laptop which was several months ago due to USB ports not working.

Editing yet again as uninstalling iTunes & downloading it from Apple Uk hasn't worked, the installation gets to a certain point and a box comes up in the middle of the screen saying:

service 'Apple Mobile Device service' (Apple Mobile Device Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start systems services.

Under that is 3 options to click on which are Abort, Retry or Ignore, the last has a box round it indicating that's the preferred option. I chose that one and nothing happened.

I am the administrator for the laptop, I do not own an iPad, iPhone or iTouch, the only Apple product I have is my iPod Classic. Surely Apple haven't got a policy now that you have to have 1 of iPad, iPhone or iTouch to be able to use iTunes???

Please could someone tell me what's going on that's stopping new version of iTunes from installing on my laptop.

    UPDATE:

Did some searcvhing via Google with iTunes error 7 windows error 193 to see what I could find.

    I followed the advice here:

    http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201668

    and here:

    http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT1923

Looking at the requirements for iTunes 12.1 on the download page I noted the 3rd item on system requirements but assumed the installer would install at the point it's needed.

It downloaded & appeared to install until it got to Apple Mobile Device Support when i got the same box as before saying Service 'Apple Mobile Device Support' (Apple mobile Device Support) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services. Under that is the 3 options to Abort, Retry or Ignore, Ignore had the blue outline so I clicked on that as I don't have iPad, iPhone or iTouch. My husband wants my iPod Classic & I've said that as late Christmas pressie/Valenetine's Day/Mother's Day pressie, I'd like him to get me the 32GB iTouch but will I be able to put music on it from my laptop without this part of iTunes or will connecting an iTouch mean that the Apple Mobile Device Support will start working?

It went further and then the box came up asking for permission to allow iTunes to make changes to my computer, I chose yes.

Further on I get the box saying iTunes was successfully installed and the tick was already in the box for it to launch after clicking finish to exit the installer. I click on finish thinking success but got 2 boxes, one hidden by the other:

The visible one said iTunesHelper was not installed correctly. please reinstall iTunes.

    Error 7

I closed that box and the other said:

iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes.

    Error 7 (Windows Error 193).

Some info in case it makes a difference:
Does/should the 64 bit installer install when it needs to or do I need to download it seperately?
I'm using Google Chrome as my browser.
Anti Virus is Avast with iTunes being on list of programs allowed.
Other media programs installed on laptop are Windows Media Player, Amazon Music Downloader, BBC iPlayer Downloads, VLC Media Player, Sky Go Desktop & Kindle for PC. Could it be one of these is the problem?

Any ideas? I was in John Lewis yesterday & their tech support have said they can sort it in 5 minutes free of charge but it's finding time to get up to JL as I'm not in the city that often. JL tech support saying they can sort it in 5 minutes suggests it's something very simple that needs resolving for iTunes to install correctly.

    SUCCESS
I downloaded iTunes 12.1 using IE, when I tried to install it, I got a box in the middle of the screen saying that the versdion I was trying to install was for 32 bit windows, under that it said click here for 64 bit installer. I clicked on it & was taken to here:

    http://support.apple.com/downloads

I chose the download for iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards).

When I got the box saying i|Tunes had installed and to click finish to exit installer, iTunes opened straight away. Just need to import my music & playlists.
