  • Whilst looking for another car i spotted a few that had gone over the service intervals. I think 12,000 miles for a diesel is too high between oil changes, Yet there were plenty that were serviced between 16k and 20k miles.

    I didnt even give them a 2nd glance.
    I don't disagree, but a lot of diesels are now designed with the schedules in mind - you can't really avoid a car on the basis that it's been serviced as-per.

    My VW diesel hasn't given much bother and with the variable service it's gone 30,000 miles between oil changes, it's not exactly low mileage now either.
  • Part ex was how I got a better deal. My car on we buy any car was only £1400 and I struggled to get anyone to offer more than that. Managed to get a Ford dealership to give me 2K though! Made no odds finance or otherwise to them. They wouldn't budge the price of 'new' car at all, but I managed to negotiate up my part ex. Just seems to be the way they wanted to do it. Made no odds to me which pot got me a reduction overall :)

    So essentially they just used the basic discount at their disposal on the trade-in value they wrote down for you.

    A £1400 car is going straight to auction, for your convenience the dealer made out they were giving you a better deal but in reality I'm afraid that was all smoke and mirrors.

    Trade-in values are generally just numbers on a page, they might offer you a smidge more but they'll be clawing back any other values elsewhere.

    From the other sides perspective, although nit a car dealer, I run a property maintenance company and occassionally get asked 'a better price fir cash'.
    Cash in large quantities is an absollute burden. If I give a discount for cash, I can't put that money in by business or personal accounts, I can't get any discounts from suppliers for the same reason, and then there is money laundering regs.

    The cash ends up getting squandered and wasted so it us of no value.

    I much prefer bank transfer!

    Same here, I've just sold two cars on eBay, one at £3500 and another at £700.... Both buyers have been suspicous I've requested they make a BACS transfer when they collect the car and stick the registration number down as the payment reference.

    No wonky notes, a clear papertrail (especially with the registration number on the banks' records) and I'm 100% satisfied the car has been paid for as soon as my phone buzzes (usually five seconds later.)

    Three years old max should only have had done test to mot history shouldn't be a problem, unless you're buying an ex taxi.
