Broken telly - shall I claim?

The daughter decided to throw the wii remote at the telly (as you do) and smashed the screen (Sony Bravia 7yrs old, paid £450) and it's irepairable.
I rang the insurers and we have accidental cover (£225/yr).
We pay £100 excess.
Equivalent telly now is £250.
We will lose 2yrs no claims and the premium will go up anywhere between £40 to £75/year.

Question: is it worth claiming? What have others done?

Thanks!

  • Personally unless anything else was broken and it really is only £250 new I wouldn't bother. In the long run it probably isn't worth it.

unless you include other things she "accidentally broke" in her nunchuck inspired wi-rage such as the fridge, bed, conservatory, lavatory, pet dog then it's probably not worth it.

Your premiums will probably go up anyway now.
You have informed them of an incident and they will have it down on your file as a none paying claim.
Not fair but that's what happnens.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I need to ring them to let them know we are not claiming.
  • Too late now they will already have made a note of your call..........

Next time don't contact your insurer regarding a loss unless you are certain you will be making a claim.

Notified losses get recorded on a database.

You must notify any insurer who asks about your claims and losses when getting quotes in the future and this reported loss will probably affect future premiums.

You can do dummy quotes online with and without this loss in your history to see what difference it makes to the premium

Strictly speaking this applies to all losses, reported at the time or not, doesn't it?

You wouldn't normally report an old TV that got busted by a wee controller!
