I wonder how British Gas, who'm you have an evident dislike for, feel about you calling their staff "lying toe rags"?

I never expected you to agree with me. I was stating a point.
And your point was stupid and wrong. British Gas know my name, and I personally rate BG the best of the bunch by a country mile..I would love to confront senior management at BG about this given a chance.. I ve made a complaint about it in the past .They are not direct employees of BG but various outside call centres who work for anyone who pays them. They are liars , or some are , I ve been hearing these tales from the elderly for years now on the doorstep. Its bordering on "sharp practice " cold calling the very elderly like this. My old Mum was very independent frail and wobbly but it did nt stop her getting a stool out and a torch to try and read an awkward E6 gas meter 7 ft high, when BG ( or their partners in crime ) phoned to con a reading out of her when I was due in a few days time. They make sure to call well before any designated meter readers are due
The point is they should nt be calling the very aged at all, however well mannered they are because some will have a go at crawling along under the stairs. I hear it when they say they d get down ok but no chance of getting up again. Its just plain daft to be even ringing anyone over,80/85 and many much younger certainly struggle like hell if they re overweight.....

To be fair, in this case, we don't actually know if the caller bullied the OP's mother into trying to get a reading. Based on what the OP's said, it's possible that, when their mother explained that she was 90 and couldn't read the meter, the caller simply assumed that she meant she didn't know how to read the meter and that is why they reassured her that it's easy to do and told her that they'd guide her through it. Now, if the OP's mother explained that it's physically difficult for her to read the meter then, of course, the caller was completely out of line.

I just don't understand how these call centre people can throw compassion and decency out the window just because they've got targets to hit.

At age Ninety, thats 90, the call centre chappy should ve been dropping phone down as if it was red hot, and ended the call there and then....90 !! thats testament alone to the mindset of these call centres

Why not? I send in a monthly reading to our gas supplier.

I can monitor what I'm using, pick up any problems with the meter if the readings aren't what's expected and make sure my DD is keeping up with the usage while not overpaying.

My elderly father, in his late 80s, who's just returned from doing 3 weeks charity work in India would be absolutely livid to read this nonsense. Your post is agest and franky insulting to elderly people.

How old are you mate ?, any late onset Alzheimers making its prescence, or Parkinsons or any other nasty ailments. Theres plenty of sprightly 90 years old around, but sorry..most are a bit knackered by then .I ve seen many fifty years olds not physically able to get down under the stairs never mind 90 year olds. If you read the OP s post it also says she feared that she d be cut off if she did nt...thats the point ,she was nt quite thinking straight.. I ve just spent 3 years getting one thief cut off for thieving tonnes of gas over 7 years.. Thats how hard it is to cut someone off

I take exception to being called a liar, when I myself support the charity my family runs and my Dad has dedicated most of his retired life to.

I took more of an exception to being called pathetic, which fortunately for you, you have now edited out, but not before I reported it. There is no need at all for personal attacks.
