Savvybuyer wrote: »Would your current bank let you open up a new bog-standard current account, to put about a pound or two into, to switch to M&S? That's what I've done, since I don't want to lose my Halifax reward account, purely in order to switch to X Bank in order to pick up £Y reward. I shall pay money in, and do as much lip service as possible towards the terms and conditions, but I don't intend to keep the account I'm switching to as it is a paltry 2% interest so as much as possible will go back to Santander or elsewhere, then once I've qualified for and got the switch reward, I shall be closing the whole thing down.
As for a savings account, why go for a savings account? I thought current accounts were the way to go. Unless there's some reason, that you can't meet minimum direct debit requirements for some current accounts, then I go for them. Perhaps Nationwide's 5% on £2,500 (if you've not already had that for a year), Lloyds 4% on £5,000, TSB that doesn't require direct debits, and the rest maybe Santander's 3%. Lloyds let you open a Club Saver account which also gives 4% (or did when I opened) although only a set limit per month is saved. There's also a 'bog-standard' saver but it's 2%, so I've shut that down and sharpish transferred it back to 3% Santander (unfortunately I'm not able to have Nationwide just yet).
If you're applying for a credit card, or want to make a mortgage application, then lots of different bank account openings is perhaps not a good idea. However, I've got no wish for either, and don't intend getting either, so I'm really not bothered at all about that. I don't know about income as in savings - my concern was that I am not currently working and therefore might be refused the account from the new bank if I didn't have enough 'income' to be transferring in each month. However, that though proved to be unfounded - I still have quite a lot of savings (in current accounts:rotfl:*) and money to go round back and forth. As for income, I assume you are still getting more than the personal allowance amounts (I am not a tax expert btw and nothing I say is giving any advice); if not then do not forget to register for tax-exempt interest if you qualify for that.
*That I seem to be merely mitigating against loss of interest:( as each deal ends and I seem to be moving to the (sadly) next best interest rate deal.
100% agree - current accounts offer better returns at the moment - if necessary set up a dummy account first to switch if there is a switching bonus (if you don't have an old account you don't need already) and don't forget to check TCB and Q for additional cashback too.

Not doing very well were they, as appear to have mixed up Domestos and own brand and also Quorn Chicken Style Fillets and expensive Quorn Mince:rotfl:.
:(:(
But... wonder if this means some high value item, somewhere, has been linked up wrongly to a really cheaper product on this price collection and whether we will come across it on wombles. Keep looking I think! I live in hope, though not liking current price collection somewhat.
(Sadly, if it is the Quorn Mince that has been mixed into the result, it's a size of Quorn Mince that isn't sold by A so there's no chance of that comparing to 99p M at all, since you can't buy it in A:(. And I don't think it would be a quite interchange of items at all, it does not necessarily work that way - even if they pick up the price from another product in error, it doesn't mean that other product, if available in A, would pick up the other product's price at all - may pick up nothing or may pick up correct price.)0 -
Suggestions please as to what we can do with ourselves in the Lake District midweek in March – 2 adults with a small budget
What I usually do when we are planning a few days away is to book the accommodation and then I use livingsocial, groupon, wowcher and other deals sites like Deal Zippy for activities and nice meals out etc all within close proximity. But this time I can’t find anything on any of these websites anywhere close to so I am a bit stuck for inspiration.
Last year we did 3 midweek breaks using a combination of deals so we explored new places and did things we would not normally consider doing, had some nice meals and afternoon teas along the way, all were resounding successes but this time I am at a loss.
We like quirky interesting places, not touristy, maybe off the beaten track, also very much into history and ruins although OH is not a keen walker. We also try not to go to places we went to when the kids were at home so we are always treading new ground
I was looking at the lakes Distillery but then I thought I don’t like whisky!
I’ve not renewed any of my membership cards yet this year – National trust, English heritage, Hi Life, Taste card.
We will be based in Patterdale so I’ve started by looking at keswick and Kendal – both seem to have Greggs and Weatherspoons which my OH likes( he is very conservative in his tastes, using deals is the only way I can get him away from these places).
Any suggestions please?
looks good for the price

Perhaps it's time to buy the Domestos on an Aldi comp. in Morrisons:idea::rotfl:.0

Debating a trip tomorrow but doubt I'll fit it in0 -
Savvybuyer wrote: »:(They are still 99p in M. To tell you the truth, I went for these yesterday, on the Monday data, as I suspected they might start comparing against full price:( due to issues with Ms not displaying the correct half price SELs and having problems determining their price in M, but, when my major store had a clear 99p half price SEL, that made me more confident. Still didn't want to risk it though as I felt they may become a full price return - I was expecting £1.99 though and not a nasty £2.99. Seems like they have associated something completely different in M with them - possibly the Quorn Mince 500g which has been £1.40 allegedly until 25/3, then allegedly 8/3 and then back to supposedly 25/3 once again (seems like M couldn't make up their mind) but which, in nearly all the stores I have, although offer labels up on the aisle ends last week, all the SELs for the actual product showing £2.99.
I think that's the regular price for Quorn Mince - although it's maybe a bit more than usual as seems to have more than doubled - this week this basket will cost you £1.59 more:p - and I've no idea what happened to the "Valid until 25/3" or even "until 8/3" of the offer labels that were still errantly kicking around last week, but were less present this week - seems like they wanted a huge price increase to £2.99 to put the item perhaps into their horrible rip-off "event" price of 3 for £5. Sadly the Chicken Style Fillets are not even linked up to a £1.99 full price (erroneous SEL) on that, but have associated with something even more expensive:(.
Think they have linked them with the 500gm Quron pieces they are £2.99 in M. But some you win some you looseI, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.
