Come back when you is sober.

I am not a coward and I relish a healthy debate.

But with you, there is something wrong.

I am sober thank you, and I didn't call you a coward.

I will however call you a tedious twit.

Umbrella scheme has no benefit to a low paid workers, it is entirely to the benefit of the agency.

if you earning a half decent hourly rate where you will actually have some expense for carring out your duties then it can be worth while using an umbrella company. It really only applies to those who work as contractors but dint want the hassle of being there own company.

if your earning less than £20 an hour then its unlikely to be of much benefit.

Most umbrella companies fix their fees and it isn't dependent on wages. Umbrellas are heavily used in white collar industries where contractors are used and pay is generally much higher (in the order of £30 ph).

If you don't like it, don't accept the job.

The agency lead me to believe they would pay me direct....the umbrella only called after I had finished my first shift......

The positive from this is once bitten , twice shy and now I will ask any agency if they use an umbrella scheme for payroll, if they say yes, then its a no from me

This is a very interesting read. From a respected source it cuts through all of the hype and spin to reflect what umbrella companies really are.

The post above preceded yours by approx 17mins.

Take your time and read it carefully.
  • Slightly different take on this, I have been asked to form a limited company by the agency I have just accepted a job with or they cannot/will not pay me. Again I wasnt informed of this on the outset only after I accepted the job, which I would really like to take.

Having a limited company will cost me greatly in accounts/returns etc and this particular job is only for six months. Do I take it that this agency isnt the usual sort of recruitment place? Any idea how I should proceed please.

I can't speak for anyone else, but personally I will only use an agency if it is all straight forward, for example they pay the wage they offer at the start and they do their own pay roll. I submit an agency that moves the posts as soon as you take the job is acting in a shady manner.

This is my gripe in my OP. They did not tell me they use an umbrella scheme (which I would have to pay for) At the induction they took my bank details and implied they would do the paying, as in "we pay every week). Nor did they tell me I would never get holiday pay. So they waited for me to complete my first shift, before dropping the bad news........
