No TV Aerial in new house?

Hi all

I might be sounding really stupid here but I have no idea about these types of things and when I move in to my new house I want to be prepared!! Basically I am due to move into my new house in March, I have been told the televisions are currently set up on Virgin cable and there is no TV aerial or satellite dish in the house. The owner currently has a virgin media package that suits him but I'm not bothered about really having Virgin as have always got on just fine with freeview and would rather not have the extra expense!

So where does that leave me, do I need to arrange for a tv aerial to be installed? Will my TVs work just using an indoor portable aerial. (Both my tvs have freeview installed - sorry don't know if this relevant!!!)

probably, the house may be wired - mine was, cabled from loft to lounge but no aerial fitted.

depends on where you live, freeview doe not generally work very well with an indoor aerial but you may be ok.

What do your new neighbours have? Nobody in my area has aerials as there is no reception. We all have to have sky dishes but some of those are only used for free view so no extra expense.

This is what we have- it's called freesat if you get it through a satellite dish. We did used to have sky, but then decided to end it. It's worth looking at sky- they may have an offer that includes installation and you may find that the cost (especially if you use a cashback site) of paying for whatever the minimum term is works out cheaper than getting an aerial fitted.

You could do what I did - move, realise there's no aerial, shrug and cancel your TV licence. One of the best decisions I've made in years.

It might not be for everyone, but I don't think I appreciated how much time we were wasting watching live TV. Could always buy a few extra films a year to get a fix as required, or maybe look at Netflix etc...

I'm afraid I've never lived in that house so have no idea whether an indoor aerial will work. Try it and se.

If it doesn't, get an aerial put up on the roof/chimney.

Our Freeview works fine, both on the large screen and smaller tvs, with a portable aerial, but we are within three miles of a mast.

Our indoor aerial is one that looks like an aeroplane wing and has a mains booster. It was bought for the caravan, but is used in the bedroom and doesn't need the booster to give good reception.

Ours was from Argos, so you could buy one and try it out, returning if not suitable.
  • I am currently watching most of my TV via a Now TV box, which runs from my wifi, but I recently purchased an indoor amplified digital aerial from Amazon, in the hope that it will allow me to use my TV's Freeview service. Haven't yet tried the aerial, but it was Amazon's best selling one a few weeks ago and only cost about £12 on special offer. Indoor aerials don't work for everyone, but an amplified one has more chance of success.

So where do you live? How far are you from the nearest tv transmitter?

  • Before getting rid of Virgin, their broadband is generally very good. If you use the Internet a lot of have a smart TV it may be worth keeping. BTW, TV aerials are petty cheap to have installed.
