Can anyone recommend a decent notebook cooler

My laptop keeps getting very hot and i've just taken the back off and one of the heatsinks has dropped off.

I keep it on a wooden desk so should be well ventillated a decent cooler seems like the next best step.

  • CPU without a heat sink... deadly. Best advise, a faster fan and a heat sink should do fine.

I have an AKASA laptop cooler, bought in Maplins for about £20. I had to go and get one in a hurry as the fan had packed up completely. The cooler works very well, and takes the power direct from the lappy via a USB port.

I dont think your aware of how laptops fans work, they are not 12v fans like you find in desktops they are 5v. They are also usually low profile 10mm or less try finding one of those choice isnt huge and you won't find anything like it in RS or maplin you need to contact companies that make fans. you alos find that laptops have control over their fan speed not the fan itself. also a faster fan creates more noise.

Anyway how about a free method of keeping your laptop cool by improving airflow. mine sits on 4 carefully crushed to the same height coke cans raising it by about 5cm so air can move easily, just don't put a can under the fan vent. on really hot days just get a desk fan at the side blowing air over it. this was my solution when my fan failed and it worked without problems untill I found a fan company that would make be a fan to replace the faulty one, yes it really was made or my laptop, fan size, cable length and the connector all replicated the original failed fan I removed and it cost me £15 raher than £100 the everywhere wanted for a replacement fan.

Thanks for this at the moment its propped under 2 dvd cases.
Looks like you've even got a similar advent laptop to me :D

Quasar, thanks for the advise i was looking at getting one of the Akasa's as they look nice so will have to pop to maplin some time soon.

I've re-attached the heat sink but am still a little cautious about it.

  • If you are working for long periods at a table/desk you could have a look for a Port Design Ergo Station - helps to cool the laptop, doubles as a 2 port usb hub and also eases the strain of using it I have found - downside is that they are around £60 :-((

They also do something called a "lap desk" which if you are working on your lap (as if anyone would do that with a laptop) supposedly aids cooling and protects your legs/nether regions from the heat too...

PS been reading some horror stories about laptop chargers causing fires lately and have started powering mine down when not in use and switching off at the mains socket too - def. not good when your laptop lives on/under the sofa... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/07/18/macbook_apple_support_hell/comments/
