Flight upgrade - buy now or later?

Hi,

I am looking to upgrade to premium economy so we can move to a exit aisle as the OH is rather tall and we will be on an 11hr flight. (flight is in September)

Currently they are about £300 for both of us to add the upgrade now. will this go down or up the closer to the flight time?

We have just paid the flights and accom off so waiting would be better for our wallet. but what's the chance of prem seating going early? or dropping in price?

UPDATE - to assist further - Flying united to USA

Anyone have an idea?

Thank you for your time :)

  • No idea.....if you wait you run the risk of someone getting them before you do.

Have you considered extra leg room rather than PE. It is usually cheaper and is often exit row or bulkhead seats. Exit row means you need to be physically able to assist in an emergency. If you can view seating plan online it might show availability of PE seats although some may be showing as unavailable as Tour operator may hope to sell as part of package. In my experience, it depends on who flight is with as to how quickly PE seats go. I would much prefer PE with monarch due to sardine tin size of their economy but I flew Emirates in economy and it was fine. Monarch PE cabin is not that large so seats may go quickly. Good luck.

I doubt it since you don't say who you are flying with and where to.

Premium economy is usually quite a small section of the plane. If you need it, it would be better to upgrade now.

    Thank you for the replies.

I have updated the main post to reflect we are flying United to USA

Last time we flew to the US (again with united) on a 10 hour flight the OH was having to sit with his knees into the recess where the arm rest of the seats ahead were he was very uncomfortable as it limited his movement.

We have been advised the bulkhead seats are chargeable via PE only- this looks to be the case on the seating plan.

I would ask on Flyertalk (link to the United forum below). Make sure to mention the route you are flying as well, it could make a difference.

How much is that per person per hour flown per extra inch of leg room?

If affordable, perhaps just book now. Check seatguru to see the best seats in this section.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • My limited experience of trying to wait it out is that any availability becomes stupidly expensive.

Book the class you want now.

(Or price up business class starting in Dublin, Copenhagen or similar - you may be surprised)
