    I think every car has to be taken on it's own merits.

    Broadly (very, very, very broadly) cars built in the last twenty-years are generally pretty solid across the board, a ten year old car in 2015 could be perfectly mechanically fit with no astounding levels of mechanical wear.

    You can, as those who've worked in the trade will atest, drive a car off of a forecourt with 100miles recorded, smack a kerb or a pothole and do ten years worth of wear 'n' tear in one fell-swoop.

    Not a facile statement. Buying a banger is more likely to go wrong then a new car. Sure, a new car could go wrong, buts if it's within 3 years old then it has a warranty. I was just making the point that maybe the OP wanted a newer car to avoid expensive repairs.

    I've known people with bangers and every one of them had major problems. It ended up costing them more to fix then the car is worth.

    Not incorrect from your experience, but it's quite a broad statement.

    A warranty won't cover 'wear and tear' anyway, so I'm not sure where you're going there?

    Im not talking about fair wear and tear. I'm talkng about parts that are likely to fail which will be covered by warranty.

    DSG Gearbox could fail. Steering,suspension,light clusters filled with water. These shouldn't fail but can sometimes. My taillight cluster was filled with water recently, got replaced under warranty.

    Thats why new cars have a warranty, incase it fails. The chances are it won't. I'd rather have that then spend over £2,000 on a new gearbox if it did fail.

    I bought my car for £8000 cash in 1998. I have serviced it myself from new.
    It broke down in it's first week of ownership due to a manufacturing fault.
    It let me down in 2006 due to an alternator fault. I put the alternator in a plastic carrier bag and gave it to the wife to get fixed. She found a local specialist who put new brushes is for £10.
    No more breakdowns after that.
    Minor services just oil and filter (£15). Major services add air filter and plugs (£30). Probably spent about £200 on brake discs, pads, shoes. Exhaust about £100. Tyres £300
    Paid local independent £200 to get through last MOT(welding)
    Maybe cost £1000 in service and repairs so far.
    It drives just a like new car. Just pop a cassette in the stereo and enjoy the drive!
