Paying by Cash when collecting Item

Hi

Can someone tell me if it's safe for me to sell to an ebayer who is coming to my house and paying by cash?

I know it's better for me as it saves the paypal fees, but it is covered by anything on Ebay (i.e. Can they tell ebay that I didn't give them the item once they paid)

I would appreciate if someone can provide information on this

If I sell anything that is collection only I always want cash on collection. I also suggest that i meet them elsewhere sometimes..(like at Tesco) as I personally don't want any random person appearing at my door. Some other ebayers may do it differently but I've had no problems what so ever this way :d

    Hi

I only accept cash on collection items as i feel it's the safest. If you accept paypal they can do a chargeback and you would have no proof they had your item as it wouldn't be online trackable.

Is it possible, that if they pay by Paypal before collecting the item, I could just send them a blank envelope sent by Recorded mail and just use that as proof of Postage?

    1 other thing

What do I give them as a receipt for paying for the item?

Do I just print of the invoice from Ebay and include that with the item?

You don't really need to worry about a receipt, but you could give him a copy of the invoice and ask him to sign it as received, or something. It doesn't matter really, because:

Ebay don't protect buyers if they pay by cash. YOU don't need to worry about proof of delivery - if he tries to put in a claim with ebay, ebay will tell him to get lost.

He reduces the risk of paying you in cash by seeing the item upfront. As long as you count the cash and check any notes are legit, you can't go wrong really.

If you're feeling weird about having him come to your house, then do as others have suggested and arrange a neutral, public location.

Try and make it as formal as possible if you are worried. Arrange a specific time for collection. Have two copies of item details, with yours and their info on. Date each and have space for signing and printing details. Keep a copy and give them a copy.

Ebay don't/can't take action against a seller for not supplying an item if buyer has not paid by Paypal. The buyer cannot take any action if they have no record of payment (which they won't have if paying by cash).

A neutral location is a good idea, (I arrange collections fairly regularly, but to my business premises) the other option is to take the item to your buyer (I assume they are close to you if collecting) and get payment that way. If it bothers you that much, you can always say it is not possible (making a polite excuse as to why you can't do it).

Actually suprisingly, they live about 40 miles away but they are coming via me on their way to somewhere else. The reason that their collecting it is firstly because it's a heavy item (postage fee is expensive) and also that they don't want to risk it getting ruined in the post.

    Thanks for all responses.
  • I sell lots of baby clothes and equipment on e-bay and have had lots of people come to the house and pay in cash.I have never had any problems I just ask them to sign to say they have received the goods and I have received the cash.I have one of those little carbon receipt books from a stationary shop.I tell them its necessary as I sometimes sell for other people and its proof of price for them.Iv also met some great people and many come back a second time and I love putting a face to a user name.

I've had people try to negotiate a bit on price when they come out to pay, so be ready in case they do.

I've collected a couple of items before - skis and a guitar - and as a buyer it tends to be quite a relaxed process, just like if you'd spotted something in the classifieds and rung up. I've also let someone collect an item once (a book - bizarrely, we met on a train platform when he got off the train, collected the book, and got back on again!) and it was fine.
