Obvious stuff really, but some good comments.
I'd add a few more ways:
Get your mobile phone from Orange
Get your energy from npower
Disclose personal details to your water company
Buy from a catalogue, especially Very
Trust credit card companies
Don't set up a direct debit on your credit card
Any others?

Can I just ask ginger, why is everyone saying its a must to set up a dd for paying credit cards? Am I missing something?
I have been paying mine each month on my internet banking. I do it manually each month. Is that OK?0 -

Yeah that's fine as long as its paid. Some people have a habit of forgetting so a dd would stop that.0 -
Hi,misspickle,
Doing it manually is fine.It is just so that there is absolutely never,ever,ever,any chance ever in the world ever that a payment is missed (in the case of forgetting,illness,being away on holiday,etc).It is a sensible safety guard,that's all.SPC #36 :staradminx 8.SPC7=£751.10 SPC8=£651.04 SPC9=£843.00 SPC10=£872.76

I like to be in control of the dates and the amounts. But I keep coming across lots of people saying set up a dd for it.
I'm just curious.0 -
It really is fine,misspickle.It is a sort of "belt and braces" job xSPC #36 :staradminx 8.SPC7=£751.10 SPC8=£651.04 SPC9=£843.00 SPC10=£872.76

Oh I see. That's OK then. I was getting worried.
I quite often pay different amounts depending on what's going on that month and if I can i pay over the minimum. But I don't want to be tied to higher amounts every month.
Suppose I could set up min amount on dd and then pay extra manually but the min amount changes each month. Depending on whether I've had to use it to spend or not.
Sorry for robbing your thread! Lol0 -
What do you mean giving too much information to your water company, you mean like your name

I'd be stuffed if I ever forgot as I would lose my 0% offer. Doubt I would forget though as I'm completely paranoid about it.
Took me years to get my credit file clean.
I was a bit silly when I was younger.
All grown up and in the real world now though lol. Scary place!!!0 -

They missed the easiest ones:
- Get a payday loan;
- Be a guarantor for someone else (vast majority will miss a payment or default);
- Open a joint account with someone who has already messed up their own credit file;
