Virgin Media Email

With VM having adopted a modified version of the gmail web interface, I was surprised to find that their mail forwarding feature doesn't work.
VM have sold around 100,000 dial-up customers to Talk Talk, so that they can "concentrate" on their cable service. Many of these customers will be using a virginmedia (or one of its predecessors) email address. The obvious way for them to deal with their email address becoming inactive is to set up a new one and forward the old address to it.
Try setting up a forwarder on a virginmedia (or ntlworld etc.) address. It doesn't tell you it won't work, just fails on the popup which asks you to confirm the forwarding address.
VM customer services have confirmed this feature has been disabled, and there are no plans to reinstate it.
If you use an email client, rather than webmail, it's not a great problem, but with webmail, you have to resign yourself to monitoring both the old and new addresses independently.
Don't think I'm missing something, am I?

But it used to work... : I have seven addresses set up (through filters) for auto-forwarding.
I can confirm that the popup for confirmation of setting up a new address just doesn't finish displaying.
What kind of rubbish is that?
I have a domain name set up to forward all mail to Virgin -- the idea being that no-one external has to know which ISP I am on, and consequently, I don't have to tell them when I move.
Think I need to speed up moving to another gmail account!0 -
Set up your Webmail to pick up your Virgin mail instead of forwarding it.
GMX (for instance) picks up all my email from whatever source. AFAIK Gmail does the same.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

It's just postponing the inevitable, the old email account will be gone in 12 months, so you may as well suck them into an email client like thunderbird and inform interested parties the old email address is deactivated when you have a new one to move to.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0

Just for completeness...
Although you now cannot add a new forwarding address, any that are already setup will still work.
I have tested that forwarding using an existing filter works, and also that I can create a new filter using an existing forwarding address (and that works too).
Do think I need to speed-up migrating away from Virginmail! (This is not the only annoyance...)0 -
And this is why I set up an ISP independent email address years ago.0

Gmail will indeed do the job. As VM have said they will keep the accounts open for 12 months after selling them to Talk Talk, then the one (proper) gmail webmail system can be used to look at new emails as well as the old ones. Assuming that is the chosen system for a new email address...
I've had my own domain and associated email address(es) for years in addition to my ntlworld one. Even though I'm on cable and not affected by this current issue, it has prompted me to be a bit more active in retiring my ntlworld address.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
