Thank you seronera. I guess I just need to find a plumber who can do what you suggest. Of the 4 or 5 mind of them have suggested this. We've been quoted for various pumps, Aqua lisa systems & pressurised systems instead!0

I confess I had to have my brain nudged a bit, but I would prefer not to dwell too much on the motivation of the plumbers who have visited you up to now. This is after all MSE and with a bit of luck we have saved you from unnecessarily parting with yours...except you might need a new shower or mixer tap..whichever is giving the bother.
How to choose a plumber? Not easy is it, but in the absence of you knowing someone you trust I tend to direct people to their local plumbers merchants as they deal with them all. They will know the decent blokes, so ask them for a couple of names of people or companies they feel happy with. You can now display an understanding of the problem and explain it to the plumber you contact. That will hopefully ensure that silly expensive solutions are left in the van.
I find in my work with boilers that most faults are simple faults. The problem is diagnosing and identifying the faulty bit when you are faced with a silent boiler grinning away at you and effectively saying "I'm saying nothing pal! You work it out"
:D
Let us know how you get on. You are halfway there now0 -
Surely the shower should have a balanced hot and cold supply? If the hot is gravity fed and the cold is mains then it's never going to work.0

Sorry its been a while, we have been away (having turned the main water off!)
We are about to track down a good plumber who has been recommended but we have just realised that there is in deed a leak behind the shower - we can't see anything but we can hear a hissing water sound in the shower which stops when we turn the shower on briefly.
Jblack - the hot tank is at the same level as the bath and the cold is mains fed from the loft.0 -
Next door neighbors had a similar issue with a continuously running overflow. Turned out to be due to the heat exchanger inside the hot water tank having a small hole. The heating header tank being higher than the cold water tank supplied the pressure differential.
Bit of a long shot in this case, but similar might apply if your water is heated from the boiler that drives the hot air system and not from an electric immersion.0 -
Thanks JP08 - unfortunately the hot water comes from an emersion tank and not the hot air heating.0
