Morrissons Reusable Bags are large and cheap, can easily carry books or DVDs
Use padded envelopes for packing, I always keep mine when ordering something from the internet.

I purchased sets of plastic storage tubs when they were on offer. They stack neatly and can be refilled and used for long term / loft / garage storage when you've finished moving.
  • Freecycle and supermarkets - ask at the bit where the staff are going to load up shelves, I got loads of boxes this way before!
  • When I last moved I got rid of my packing cartons on Freecycle. They were all collected within days. When I next move I shall put out a request on Freecycle and hopefully will be repaid my favour.
  • In the past when I've moved, I got a load of empty crash helmet boxes from motorcycle stores. These aren't very big, but were the perfect size for things like books, crockery and ornaments. I've found them sturdy, reusing some at least three times.

Also, I never empty chests of drawers. I just take the drawers out of the chest and keep all the stuff inside them. Need to be careful how you load the van though!

And I've learnt from experience to sellotape remote controls and cables to the applicance they team up with so they don't become separated - I've lost a couple of cables and remotes during moves, so ended up with the cost of buying replacements.
  • Another vote for recycling boxes from supermarkets. Last time we moved we managed to get lots of good quality boxes from Primark.

We also bought a few cheap suitcases from charity shops for all our clothes. We had all our downstairs stuff in recycled boxes & all the bedroom stuff in cheap suitcases from charity shops. Worked really well.
  • I always keep my old socks and T-shirts (washed of course!) for packing both for moving house and for going on holiday. Good for glassware and some delicate items. You can also ask charity shops for old clothes they're given but can't sell.
  • We moved recently.
Scrounged bubble wrap from work and friends
Got boxes and paper free (well included in price) from removal firm.
Supplimented with double wall cardboard boxes and bubble wrap from Costco (£15 for 20 and £7/roll)
Sold boxes afterwards on eBay to offset cost.
Didn't do it but noticed Free cycle has boxes etc up for grabs too.
  • Someone suggested a local bookshop as they always have loads of boxes from book deliveries. They were happy to give me the boxes as they were going to recycle them anyway.
  • I have been using Approved Food a few times per year for a few years now. They always pack stuff in small boxes within a large box and use plenty of bubble wrap on bottles. I always put the packaging on freecycle and it generally goes straight away.
