Time taken to charge credit cards

Hi,


Does anyone know how long companies have to charge a credit card after a purchase has been made? I pre-ordered something in October 2014 which was dispatched at the end of December but so far the charge has not been made to my credit card. Thanks.

It is 6 months for debit cards, I would expect credit cards are the same.

[STRIKE]AFAIK, it's 3 months for Visa[/STRIKE], but I recall seeing somewhere that it's 6 month.

ETA: I seem to have misunderstood YorkshireBoy (post #5 in the thread below) once, and it's 6 months (180 days) actually:

6 months for Visa and Mastercard, 5 months for AmEx. No idea for Diners card

The system will allow them to charge you whenever they want, decades later potentially, but there are chargeback options available to you if it is outside the card networks limits.

Just because a chargeback is done or the transaction is declined doesnt stop the debt being owed of course.
