They are useful as they show what you are using at that moment so you can link it to an appliance.
I just did a quick USwitch quote (using my postcode - yours will be different but the principle applies) for the last year use - 7774 kWh 6328 day/1346 night. Prepay came out at £1450 E7 / £1385 single rate and monthly DD £1343 single rate. Fixed tariffs would be even cheaper.0 -
Your gas usage is above average, but nothing to write home about.
Your electricity is bonkers - and you appear to be using most of it in the day. E7 generally is only cost effective for those with storage heaters generating heat at night. You're using more than most and using it at a more expensive rate. You're paying a premium during the day.
Something is making this meter accumulate KWh - it could be faulty (possible, but fairly rare) or you're using it. You don't need any gadgets to find out the latter - turn everything off then go through the house turning everything on and off individually. Wait for a minute with each one and note what the power usage is.0 -
If the house is already being heated by gas it's just not credible that you're using as much as 11,000kWh PA on top of that. That's so much power you would notice the heat. That consumption would raise the temperature of my 3 bed semi by four degrees.
Let's be clear, that's an average of 1254W all year round 24/7, not just a few appliances left on standby!0 -
Eh? There will be zero difference in tracking usage with a prepayment meter. If anything, it will be far more fiddly and involve not just reading the front screen.I have in desperation agreed to go onto prepay meters for both Gas and Electricity now - they are being fitted at the end of this month. Hopefully I will be able to see what is using so much power then.0 -
Thanks all - Npower really are completely useless - honestly - the left hand doesnt seem to have a clue what the right hand is doing!
Phoned them again today to cancel request for pre-pay meters and request to come off E7 - and all of a sudden the cheapest rate they can quote me now is 126 p/month for gas AND electric - this as opposed to the 361 p/month they quoted as the 'cheapest rate' in December.... I give up! Have asked for it in writting!
Will still try to ascertain why my electric is still so much higher than my gas (they are now quoting 80 p/m electric and 46 p/m gas) as its gas central heating....still a bit confused there - but at least i can sleep a bit better at night now!
Thanks again everyone for the advice!! :-)0 -
Nikki2 - Can you for the next few days, take daily meter readings. Then we can establish your current electricity use. The we can to begin to try and isolate the high usage.0

Switching from E7 may require a meter change, which normally costs around £60. However you will recoup that in short order given your incredibly high day rate usage. No free lunch, and no free laptop
