Engine swap on used car, should I have more documents?

So a couple of days ago I brought my first car, it had the engine swapped at 148,000 miles with a used engine of the same spec that had 46,500 miles on it....
The dealer I brought from had hardly any paperwork for the car, and just one piece of paper from the garage that had done the engine swap which is effectively just a receipt for the person who brought the car previously after it had had the swap and a little note written on the bottom saying 'engine replaced on ...' it has the garage details on it and a Vin number....
Now I dont know a lot about cars, and nothing really about buying them (I took someone with me to look at the car though)...In hindsight I'm wondering if the used engine should of came with more documents, or is a simple note and vin number enough??
Sorry if a really silly question!

  • I've bought second hand engines in the past, they don't generally come with any documents.

  • If its the same engine and you knew that the engine had been changed then theres no real problems. To keep everything 100% then you should see if the dealer/garage changed the engine number on the V5 log book when you put your new keeper details on. If not then you can do that when you get the V5 in your name.

A receipt from the place where there engine was bought with a note of the mileage would be nice to back up their claim for the mileage.

  • Oh ok Thankyou! I didnt think of checking the logbook. So will it have both the old vin and new vin on there somewhere when I receive it back?

No, the VIN hasn't changed. The engine number has changed, and it should say that in the relevant field on the V5C.

If it's the same capacity engine, that's all there is to it. Whether you want other paperwork for your own peace of mind or whatever is entirely down to you and the vendor.
  • Oops sorry I just did some googling and realised the Vin is actually on the vehicle not the engine. dumb moment!

Great that makes me feel a bit better then, I'll have to look over the v5 when I get it back and check.

Also, I was trying to get breakdown cover but a lot of the companies say no cars with mileage over 100,000 are covered...so could i still get breakdown cover seeing as i have a newer engine even though my speedometer will say way over 100,000 miles?

    Thankyou all again

The engine might have done <100k, but the entire rest of the car has done more. So, no.

Go for personal breakdown cover - no age or mileage limits, and you're covered whatever car you're in.

No. Firstly, breakdown cover is for the whole car, not just the engine.

Second, You've no way of proving what the engine has done.

Thitd, and perhaps more important, you've no way of knowing what it's done either. You've just taken the vendor's word.
