Direct debit issue

Hi All

Basically, I've been having a nightmare with a cancelled O2 Refresh contract. I thought it was all sorted so I cancelled the Direct Debit.

Long story short they messed up and reconnected me in error and have sent me a bill charging me an early termination fee... for a second time and for their error (there shouldn't be termination fees on Refresh..), and today (2 days after the ETF statement) sent me an adjusted bill that shows, after bringing forward the balance for the ETF, that they owe me money.

The last time I had an ETF, then a corrected bill, they still debited the money, even after the adjusted bill showing I owed no money.. and I had to call to get them to refund it (10 days to complete a refund is unacceptable in my opinion), this time however, the Direct Debit has been cancelled my end.

Where do I, and my credit rating stand? My O2 account clearly shows I'm in credit, but from the previous they will try and take the money.

O2 say that if its cancelled it won't effect my rating, but due to the issues I've had, sadly I'm not convinced by their word.

I do have a lot of documentation in writing should I need it in the future.

If an error occurs with a direct debit the fastest way to get a refund is to invoke the direct debit guarantee at your bank. Ensure your bank knows that the DD mandate is cancelled and should not be revived. If they do allow further payments firstly insist on an immediate refund, then make a formal complaint to the bank about them ignoring your instructions.

I admit none of this will stop o2 asking you for money, justified or not. Nobody has managed to devise a way of ensuring mobile phone companies act efficiently... if only! But at least you'll be arguing with the disputed money in your possession.

If you've cancelled it with your bank, your bank can't let them take it. If it is taken, then get an immediate refund from your bank.
