Broadband for student house in september

Options
Hi,

In september I will be moving into a student house with my friends and I was wondering if anyone can suggest a cheap and reliable broadband and also the best way to have wireless (or is that just going to be more complicated)?

Thanks,

  • I think this really depends on the area you're moving to which you didn't specify. You can go to thinkbroadband (formerly ADSLguide) for a list of all ISPs and user ratings.

Don't know much about wireless though, just heard it's easy to hack into, so be prepared to invest in a decent firewall/antivirus program and other paranoid computer security measures. :D
  • or if it's easy to hackn then just hack into someone elses.....haha

We've got sky bb in our house, Its a tenner a month for unlimited 16mg and you get a free wireless router with it. it does all us just fine and there are 8 of us. The contract does last for a year though so if you don't plan to stay ion your house for a year then I'd look elsewhere.
There are many things in life that will catch your eye, only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.
  • As you are going to be sharing with other students I would suggest that you do not even think about looking at the cross-promotion boradband deals that are around i.e. free BB with orange mobile contract or £300 off a laptop when you take out a BB contract. You will be stuck with endless problems with poor cusotmer service and will get alot of hassle with splitting bills etc...

For a student house I would go for a straight up broadband only deal. The sky deal above seems to be very good value if it is still available. Even if you do not live there for 12 months, the free wireless router more than offsets the cost of the unused months (especially as you split the bill). If everyone is moving out of the house before the 12months of the contract finishes then you should be able to 'buy out' at the cost of the remaining contract.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

Whoa, I was so amazed about the deal I had to check it out on their website, it does say that you have to be a Sky TV customer in order to get broadband?! And I'm as always particularly amused about the small print when 'unlimited' broadband is offered. Sky keeps it very vague what they define as 'Fair Usage Policy', it makes me really mad. You either offer unlimited usage or you don't!
  • I was amazed by that Sky deal. I want it, but obviously can't cos I don't want Sky. I think we might go with Virgin Media. But, our flat doesn't have a line put in so will have to fork out loads for that from BT :(

Why? Virgin Media is the successor of NTL Cable, so what's got BT (phone) to do with it? VM is cable broadband, not to be confused with DSL (BT) and AFAIK they don't charge extra for line installation but it's worth checking on their website if their broadband service is available in your area.

You will need one with a high download limit, be careful if your going for the cheapest packages.
  • Though there are many cheaper options out there, the most reliable one as far as I'm concerned has been Virgin Media [used to be Telewest]..When I signed up for it in 2004 I had broadband for 17.99 along with digital TV + phone for another £ 10.50..broadband was download limit-free which was vital ! but those offers only last for like a year, but if uve never been on Virgin before then you should go for it since they always target newcomers and even though the offers last for say a year or if lucky two it would be worth it..[uni life is normally 2 yrs anyway, taking away fresher year]

Oooh thanks. Everyone keeps telling me we need BT to put a line in! So VM will put a line in instead of BT?
