Don't know whether to get a survey

Hi
I'm very new to all this and hoping to get some advice.
Soon to be purchasing a flat for £170,000. This flat is 'new build' in the sense that it has not been lived in before, The building itself is not brand new, it used to be commercial space and has been converted into residential flats.
The Estate agent has informed us that there will be a 10 year warantee on this property.
My husband and I are arguing over whether to opt for a survey or not. We are not taking a mortgage so there will be no lenders valuation. It seems wrong to not carry out any kind of survey at all, but at the same time I don't want to shell out money if it is really not necessary.
Would you perform a survey in this case?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Warrantee might not be worth the paper that it is written on if the company behind it goes bust or disputes your claim and of course if you need to claim on it you have the hassle of doing so.
If it's been a commercial building then a full survey is worth it to look at the conversion IMHO, especially as you aren't getting a survey for a mortgage, a future surveyor might pick up on something that you miss or ignore as unimportant.
Chances are that everything is alright but wether you want to risk it is another matter, even a small defect could cover the surveyors fee.0 -
no point in having a building survey done as the surveyor will only be able to look at your flat not the while building so waste of money! Homebuyer's would be sufficient0

If newly converted with NHBC in place it is probably better to get a professional in to look at snagging as all building regs etc should be signed off which your solicitor will be checking.0
