Is it reasonable that the OP has done this?0 -

If there was nothing in their contract (and I know that we only have the OP's word about this at this point) preventing them from doing it or nothing that stated they would forfeit the cost of the table, then yes, I think it is reasonable for them to cancel and get a refund.
What is the point in having any terms and conditions for a contract if any party to that contract can change it as they see fit?0 -

It's not actually clear that they have changed or added any terms0 -
Why are people making out I'm lying, I had a baby 2 months ago and it was horrific, I had a prolapsed cervix. I phoned this hotel on the 6/2. Yesterday the 10/2 I went back to doctors as I didn't feel well, I have now got complications with the prolapse and have to be seen by a consultant on Saturday, and I'm sure I won't be up to going out for a meal that evening. They shouldn't have taken the Money In the first place, as they said it was just for security. No-one usually pays for their meal before even going to the hotel to eat it anyway.0

If you're confident of your case then contact your card issuer to ask for a Chargeback for an unauthorised transaction.0

They are not - all they are saying is that you may not have taken in (understandably) all the hotel said. There's not much of a difference between 'we won't take any money' and 'we won't take any money now' or 'we wont take any money yet' if you are not feeling at your best0 -
I'd forget about the £40, your health is worth far more than that. A similar thing happened to me 4 years ago with a weekend away booking. Unfortunately I had a heart attack the Wednesday before it. We tried to reschedule it but that wasn't possible. The £250 I lost was the last the thing on our minds.0

Perhaps chargeback is your best option.0 -
As it's Valentine's Day then I suspect the hotel will have no problem finding someone else to eat these meals. Therefore, despite what their T&Cs say regarding non-return of a deposit, they can only claim for what they've lost. Which will be a few minutes of admin time, not forty quid's worth.
Write to them stating the above, offering them £5 for their admin time and asking that they return your remaining £35. If they don't, you could threaten them with small claims court although the small sums involved mean that's not a cost effective option. Instead just trash their reputation on tripadvisor"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
