Structural Engineer costs

  • We had a SE draw up the steels in our extension, for a cantilever corner, and vaulted roof steels.

The charge was £850 plus VAT. I rang another SE and told him the rough details, and he felt he would not do it any cheaper, and suggested we went with the original SE as he had a working relationship with the architect.

It seemed a lot, but when I eventually saw the plans he produced and the 15 pages of drawings and stress calculations for B/regs, it seemed fair.
20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D

I would get some quotes but like DG and teneighty I already have a regular relationship with a SE and I'm sure get a decent price, he only rarely needs to visit site. But I wouldn't expect Joe public to get such a good deal for a one off.
For a cash job I normally get charged £100 for a site visit and then would expect something in the region of £200-300 for the calcs for a couple of connecting beams including any fabrication details. So through the books including VAT and BC submission wouldn't put it out of the question.
The only way to be sure is to get your own quotes
