Hotpoint washing machine ping pong ball?

My Hotpoint washing machine (Model FEW12 or FEW10) began to flood the kitchen the other day, pouring water out from the detergent drawer. Having taken a few apart in my time I tried removing and checking the pump, then I removed the filter which sits in a rubber case between the drum outlet and the pump - It was horribly blocked with unspeakable filth - Having put it together again it all works fine now except that I'm left with a white ping pong ball. It appeared during the taking it to bits stage but I'm not sure where from or what it does or where it goes - I just have a spare ping pong ball left over. A friend told me she had the same issue and that it does need to go back in the machine but does not know where. Is there a friendly wash machine repair man out there who could tell me whereabouts this little ball comes from and how urgent is it that I get it back in there? The machine seems to be working fine without it.

It's a sump thing to save detergent, known as an "eco-ball"... supposedly. ;)

We often just toss the damn things, they jam up with the scum etc. in there and cause no-drain faults and the likes. More hassle than they're worth in many cases IMO.
