Crackling noise in my oven - potential death trap?

Evening MSE-ers!
Last night I noticed a very faint crackling noise coming from my oven. It stops when you switch off the power at the wall, putting paid to the theory that it was just the element contracting!
It isn't really noticeable unless it is silent in the room but it does sound like something electrical and I am now too scared to use the oven in case it electrocutes me!
Any thoughts from those more techinically minded? I intend to replace the oven reasonably soon, but I do want to use it in the meantime providing it won't blow my head off in the process, so if you can reassure (or warn) me, I would be very grateful!
Thanks....

It could be a bad connection in the oven, or the element is on it's way out, doubt anyone can say without seeing it, as for =
"blow my head off in the process," It's more likely the oven would detach itself from it's fittings and fly around the ceiling a couple of times
At most it would blow the fuse! best get it checked before it goes.0 -
Thanks eco-friendly - that has set my mind at ease!!
Think it might be time to look for a new one as the crackling noise has just joined a list of: the door which doesn't close properly, the seal which doesn't seal, and the icky stuff between the two layers of glass in the door as reasons why our oven probably isn't the most effective appliance our house!
I will brave it for now, but will be scouring the boards for a money-saving alternative for the near future!0 -
Hi RadoJo,
What oven is it, make and model?
There's a few things it could be, the most obvious being that the mains lead is dodgy so that's worth checking, especially the connections at the terminal block.
Check it with the power off!
