Son has Amex Gold Card in US; turned down for standard Amex card in UK

Our son works for an investment bank in the US where he is on a good salary. He has been there 10 years. He has no outstanding debts and an excellent credit history. In the US he has an Amex Preferred Rewards Gold card along with several other high end cards. However he is transferring back to the UK imminently (same firm) and has applied for a number of UK cards. These (platinum) cards have all been approved.

His credit rating is excellent -it was checked out for renting a house here and is currently 998. However his application for a standard UK Amex card has been rejected. The Amex rejection letter specifically says he has a clean Experian record but they have decided he does not meet their criteria for a card at present. (He still has his US one. )Anyone have any idea why this might be. Obviously it is not causing him any significant problem but am intrigued as to possible reasons for rejection.

Anyone got any idea?

He should contact Amex global transfer (ring the number on the back of his current Amex card), they can open him up an account in another country as long as he has had card in the US for 12 months.

When I moved to the UK about a year back, I applied for an Amex Platinum Cashback card using their standard link. There is a form field there asking for the account number of any other Amex account held - I provided my US card number in this field. While the application wasn't immediately approved, I got an email from the Global Transfers team couple of days later asking for a copy of my & my wife's passport. Emailed them scanned copies and the cards landed within 3-4 days with a pretty good credit limit.
