Mother opened a store card in my name

Hi im after some info and advice

In 2013 my mother opened a store card in my name, without my knowledge. She then proceeded to rack up debt to the amount of ~£2800. Th first I heard about this debt was when First Credit rang me telling me 'I' had defaulted and not paid. My mother has since come clean and said it was hers but it has ruined my credit rating.

I just want to know if i have any options, clearly reporting her is one but will that even repair my credit rating?

Is there anything else I can or should do??

Many thanks in advance

  • I think to have it corrected they would probably want you to report it to the police which could cause some family problems.
  • If you report it I'm pretty sure it will be recorded as fraud and removed from your credit rating altogether but she will get in trouble legally for doing it. It's your choice and put in the position I would be tempted to report her considering you're now gonna be paying for her mistake for 6 years on your credit rating.

Write a letter, signed by you and your mother explaining that the debt is hers and both sign it and send it off. See what they say.

If you claim it was fraud but refuse to report her to the police then the company will just assume you are trying to get out of debt.

If you want it to go away and clean up your credit record you have to report it and let her deal with the consequences of her actions.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • So, your mother did it to you and your sister?

Why is your mother so cruel?
