Bonkers Holiday rules!

My husband started a new job in October last year, he is part time so is entitled to 3 weeks holiday a year.

Yesterday he was called to the office and told he has to let them know what dates he wants to take his holiday for the year by the end of this week and that he has to take it in 1 or 2 week blocks, not individual days. He discussed it at length with them and eventially they agreed he could take one of the weeks as days but he has to give 2 months notice each time!!!

Is it me or is this just totally bonkers? He's not happy about it at all, we have childcare to work around and last year, because he only had a few days holiday accumulated, they were fine about him taking the odd day here or there when we couldn't arrange childcare, now he has to take a whole week!

    As far as I understand it employers can stipulate where holidays are taken and enforce mandatory holidays.

    As a manager I have to ensure that all employees take the required amount of holidays and we are not left short.

    Fairly standard in some places to do the holiday allocations forthe year at the start.


    when you say part time and 3 weeks holiday can you clarify what part time he works because if it is part of a week every week, he is entitled to 5.6 weeks.
  • I asked my husband if he had discussed it with the others and he said they didn't know about the rule, i wondered if they just make part time staff do it but that's a bit unfair.

    I'm tempted to go into a different branch and quietly ask a staff member if it's the case in their branch
  • He works 1000-1600 3 days a week but one of the days alternates every other week then he works 0500-1100 or 1300 every Saturday

    3x6hr days.

    He is entiled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks of 3 days each, 16.8 days

    these can include BH.
  • How does that work then, if he was to take a week off he is using presumably 6 holiday days but he would normally only be working 4 days/24 hours over 4 days

    Surely if he has to book weekly blocks he is using holiday on days that he wouldn't normally even be working?

    I'm very confused by the whole policy

    Yes, that is true.

    However it is unlawful to treat a part time employee less favourably than a full time person. So, if the employer lest full time staff have complete weeks off (or whatever) but only allows part time staff individual days that may be arguable.

    You said he works 3 days so each week off he uses 3days of the 16.8 days he should be getting.

    why are you now saying he works 4 days?


    how are they allocating the 3 weeks he gets.
