MBNA - payment protection that we did not request?

Hmmm, I hope someone can advice me here :o

We transfered a balance over to the MBNA platinum card, we also used it for purchases but we were making payments above the minimum payment so that was all fine. Now, I've been going through the statements whilst organising all our paperwork and have noticed that they have been adding payment protection to our account - I know we did not opt for this as we have another insurance policy in case my dp is unable to work - not only that but at one point they added it, tipping us over the limit which appears to have triggered the 0% offer finishing so not only have they been adding a considerable whack every month they have been charging us interest for the privilige!

The card is in my dp's name and he hates being assertive with banks etc, I would like him to phone them and ask when and how we asked for payment protection exactly and try to get at least some amount back - meanwhile i'mlooking for a balance transfer but worried about how this now looks on our credit record.

Well, sorry for the incoherant drivel but i'd be very intrested if anyone has any advice or suggestions xx

Some credit card providers used to have PPI as an opt out rather than in.

If he didn't say that it was not wanted it was automatically added.

You need to get your other half to ask for a copy of his card application.

If he is not comfortable dealing with this by phone he should put a request to cancel in writing immediatley saying he did not request the cover, he should also ask why the cover was added and at what point, i.e was it ticked on the application form or added when he activated his card. You should also request a full refund and any additonal charges that you have incurred. If you want to apply for another card just make sure he is within his agreed limit on his existing card.

    Good luck!

    thankyou both!

I am sure he didn't apply /opt in for the ppi as I filled the application in with him online - so we will follow your advice and I'm also going to trawl through the old emails to see if there are any about the application on there. x
