They do also offer "Direct savings" and Direct ISA" accounts, which are internet based and an investment account that you operate by post.
These are more like the old fashioned national savings bank that used to operate in the 1950's and 60's - but generally the interest rates are not very competitive, and they don't offer debit cards or cheque books.
Most people associate stocks, funds and retail bonds with the word 'investment' nowadays. NS&I, despite the "I" in their name, doesn't really offer any investments. It's just savings, some of them multi-year, but they are still savings.
The NS&I index linked certificates (not on sale to new applicants) are still reasonable value, and the current issue of the 65+ savings bonds are good for those who qualify. The other great thing about NS&I is that there is no £85K limit on your deposits, so it is an ideal place for keeping large sums for a few months for people who are in between houses, or need to deal with a large inheritance.0 -
