Which Tesco Credit Card?

Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a Tesco Credit Card so that I can claim more Clubcard points as the majority of my spending is with them. I'm having issues choosing which one is right for me.

I plan on paying it off each and every month so the balance transfer and purchases offers are no big deal to me but I have seen two cards in particular.

The first is the low APR card (7.8%) and the other is a 0% on purchases for 17 months but offers 1000 Clubcard points when a purchase or balance transfer is done in the first 2 months but then the APR goes to 18.9% after the 17 months.

Once this has been sorted I could then look at using the refer a friend offer of another 1000 points (if it works that way) with someone else who has a Tesco card.

From the info above, which card would be better for my needs?

Thanks,
Andy

If you pay it off every month, the APR is immaterial.

I thought as much but didn't know if there was a reason to go for the low APR one instead of the 0% on purchases since I was planning on paying it off each month.

Guess it's the 0% one since I'll get 1000 Clubcard points for using it and then I'll try getting the refer a friend offer of 1000 points too.

    Thanks for clearing it up.

Any credit card if paid in full charges no interest. You'd get the low APR one if you tend to occasionally carry a balance, but not often enough to need a balance transfer.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
  • Do you still get extra points when you spend?

Personally, I think Tesco are having real problems....

Subject to qualifying purchases you still get 1 point per £4 spent out of store.

Or if you spend (for example) £40 in store you'd get 40p worth of points and then 10 points on top for using the credit card as a method of payment AND as your Clubcard.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

    It's 19 months 0% on purchases.

Why wouldn't you want to make use of that and, rather than paying them back in full every month, save all but 1% (or £25 or whatever)...making a little interest for yourself along the way? Obviously the amount you'd make would depend on your credit limit and spending.

If you still do want to pay in full, then if your Tesco fuel bill is high, then there may be better cards available (such as Santander 1-2-3 which gives 3% cashback on fuel and 1% cashback on supermarket shopping). You could still use a standard clubcard as well (for reduced points).
