First time family holiday in August

Options
I hope I am permitted to post in this forum.
My family of four intend to head abroad this year after the last 9yrs or so holidaying in the UK.
The thought of this prospect fills me with fear about cost hikes during August (husband and I both off work first two weeks August).
We want to know if such cost hikes genuinely exist, and what holidays are recommended at that time of year - where in the world? Europe? USA? All four of us need new passports or renewals too.
Thanks in advance!

  • How much is your total budget?

    How old are your children?

What type of holiday do you want?

The answers to those questions will help.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
  • I am expecting around £2000 for two weeks.
Girl age 6, boy age 11.
Beach holidays are our idea of heaven. Maybe water parks too.
We want to be able to put the children to bed and then we can chill with a glass of wine.
Maybe a villa? Or camping which is what we love!
    Thank you!

Most of Europe will be expensive early August. Late August is cheaper as a lot of Europe are back in school mid August.

If you go to the US it'll depend where, it's probably about the worst time to go to Florida (peak hurricane season, very hot & humid, and busy despite the weather!). But elsewhere in the US it'll be different.

Check local school holidays etc and try to find somewhere where it's off peak. But in early August that'll likely mean long haul.

Packages are likely to be expensive anytime in the UK school holidays no matter where you're going as they price mainly based on UK demand. Organising it yourself will get you a better deal generally.

Loads of excellent campsites in France and Spain, often right on a beach, you can hire a static caravan or chalet/lodge etc if you don't want to take a tent, but it won't be particularly cheap in early August. You might just about manage on your budget if you drive there, you'll do it easily if you take a tent!
  • We have 2 weeks in zante booked for late August into September but it was 3000 and that was with 1 free child place, I think you will struggle to find 2 weeks for 2000, our weeks holiday last August was £2000 but was only a week, good luck,
    mummy to 3 monsters!
trying to money save, but spot too many bargains on here!!
  • foxymum1977 who did you book with??
  • My guess is she booked with Olympic or First Choice. They seem to be the main 2 for free child places.
  • We have just booked our hol for june and that was round 1500 for 11 nights for 2 adu and 2 children i think you may struggle with a budget of 2000 probably more towards the 3000 mark jet2 hol have some good deals and low deposit but also remember it's not just the cost of the holiday you have travel insurance, getting to and from airport, passports, spending money, cloths ect last year we were in the same position and ended up costing us around 5000 for a self catering hol in greece with spend ect

Yes but that's off peak, OP is going in August.

As above, unlikely to get a package for OP's budget, look at booking independantly especially if going to a campsite/caravan site.

I've not booked a package for a few years but last time I did, as I remember all these "free" child places were a con. Instead of charging for the child they charge "underoccupancy" charges instead!! Eg book an apartment that takes 4. 2 adults and 2 "free" children, only the adults count as "occupants" because the children are free, so you pay underoccupancy charges because there are only 2 paying in an apartment for 4!

Not sure if they've cleaned up their act since then...

We are doing a fortnight in 2bed house on lisbon coast booked via holiday rentals part of tripadvisor and flights with tap via skyscanner. 1800 ish as we wanted pool.

Packages of similar price had too many compromises eg flight times, transfer times, big resorts etc

    Good luck!
