in Credit cards
Hi,
I just phoned MBNA to cancel my credit card, as I'm not using it anymore.. its had a nil balance for months.
I get transferred to the membersave/cancellation department, and when I told him I was cancelling as I don't use it anymore and I've already got two other cards (MBNA was for clearing a balance from another card)...he gave me 6 months interest free on all purchases - said I was entitled to it anyway (although I doubt they would have given it to me if I hadn't been cancelling).
I took it, hung up, then remembered I get 1% cashback from egg..and cashback is better than interest free if I have the money.
Still - if I spot something I can't afford to write off one month, I can write it off over the next 3-4 without paying any interest.
Got me wondering though - whats the best things MSE members have been offered when attempting to cancel a card?

How can 1% cashback be better than 6months intrest free on all purchaces over the next 6 months?I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.0 -
If I have the money it is. It's an Egg Money card which pays me for spending money I've already got.
MBNA are just letting me borrow it without paying interest.. if I don't need it, I'm losing out on my cashback.0 -
got 5 months interest free on purchases with morgan stanley.0

£1000 of purchases = £10 cashback with Egg money (asuming you are not using one of their special deals with selected partners).
£1000 put on a savings account at Egg savings (as an example 5.75% gross 4.6% net) would give you net £19.66 after 5 months!
If you spend more the MBNA deal will be even more attractive!
I know that you may not have £1k immediately to put in savings account and that you have to make minimum payment each month to MBNA but I would go for it.0 -
I think my best deal was, well, nothing. The one and only time I thought i'd see if they'd offer me something to stay I was basically told ok we'll action your request to close your account and then hung up on me. :-S0

Once I was offered a cuddly toy. And another time a mickey mouse keyring. I was delighted.Krusty & Phil Madoff, 1990 - 2007:

I called RBS a few weeks ago to cancel a Mint card. Reason for cancelling was because I had the GE cashback card for UK spend and a Nationwide card for non Sterling purchases.
I was passed to the retention team, who politely thanked me and said they understood my reasons for closing and that perhaps they would be able to offer something similar in future.
So bottom line is they could offer nothing to match the benefits I already had.0
