Getting upgrades

Actually, slightly off topic but I remember when I took my wife away for her 40th I asked the restaurant in advance for a window seat (the restaurant overlooked the main square in Krakow) which they kindly did. And then they even brought out a little birthday cake at the end for her- as much to my surprise as my wife!0

Re flight upgrades as a lot have said, I've only had it when they messed up. We got outbooked by KLM Amsterdam > Manchester. I had had an awful time in Holland (Nothing to do with the country, I was just very ill) and burst out crying at the thought of spending one more day there. We didn't make a fuss, simply went away from the desk and had some water and tissues.
30 minutes later an attendant came and said we could board the plane and they'd upgrade us to business to make sure we got home. Not sure if it was me being so upset or them mucking up, maybe a combination.
Re hotel, some booking companies can put notes or requests when they fax through to the hotel. I used to work for Superbreak, and we used to have a little box where you could put requests in, or you could put 'honeymoon' etc. It didn't guarantee the hotel would do anything of course, but the majority of the time they did.
I booked my mum into the Radisson in Rome when I worked there for their 30th wedding anniversary. I rang through to them and mentioned it etc, and I also bought a bottle of champagne for them to have in their room on arrival. When they got there, they had been upgraded to a fantastic room, and ofc had the bottle of champers I had bought them.0 -
Airlines rarely offer free upgrades nowadays & if any are available, they will be offered to frequent flyers first.0
