How long to switch?

You are free to apply now without penalty. Since last year 49 to 42 days before the end of a fix you can start the process and not be moved to the Standard tariff or pay an early termination charge.
The actual transfer process will take seventeen days (ha!) to four to six weeks. Gas transfers usually take a week or two longer.0 -
npower to eon recently took 4 weeks. It felt like longer - 5 weeks later, still don't have the credit refund from npower...8 days after an email enquiry asking why they didn't refund it on the day they said they would...I'm still waiting.0

As of last month, it should only take 17 days with the majority of suppliers, but since it's still early days, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes longer.
Remember that the Big Switch event ends in 3 days and make sure your MIL's supplier refunds any remaining credit once the final bill has been paid.0 -
Switching - 23 days so far, and no indication as yet that my old supplier has been told about my gas transfer as it is still accepting meter readings.0
